I Can't Believe It !!!!!!

It never ceases to amaze me when I see a new patient how many times I am told that they never had an oral cancer screening.

  When I check their lips and cheeks patients have felt someone put fingers in their mouth before so it is not much of a big deal.  But when I check the roof of the mouth and under the tongue people notice something is different. And when we place their tongue on a cotton gauze and examine the very back of the tongue patients realize this is different.

I explain that every new patient we see and every time a patient comes in the office for a hygiene appointment an oral cancer screening is performed.  I may never find anything, but I will always look.  Anything questionable will be followed and biopsied if needed.


The back part of the tongue is the most common place for oral cancer to begin.  If someone is not actively looking for it, it won't been seen.  Make certain your dentist and hygienist looks.

A friend of mine died as a result of oral cancer.  He was not regularly examined by his dentist  and when the mass on his tongue was noticeable...it was too late. The next two years were a nightmare of surgeries and survival until he finally succumbed to the cancer.
