“My Dentist told me I have TMJ”

Everyone has a Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ).  That is like going to the doctor with a limp and you are told, ‘You have Knee”... when your knee hurts

When there is a problem with the way the jaw joint or the associated structures (teeth and muscles) work together, symptoms can occur.  The catch all statement or when the dentist doesn’t know what to do is, you have TMJ.”  A better discription is TMD (Temporo-Mandibular Dysfunction).

If left untreated, it can have very serious and long-term effects. Below are some of the most common risks of not seeking treatment for TMD:

  • Chronic pain: When the joint becomes swollen or painful, it can cause discomfort in not only the jaw, but also the mouth, ears, eyes, shoulders, and head (often triggering chronic headaches and migraines).   We are very successful in managing TMD related headaches and migraines.  Untreated, the jaw joint will deteriorate more.
  • Poor dental health: Because those with TMD often favor one side of the jaw for chewing, the problem usually leads to uneven wear of the teeth, broken and fractured teeth, fillings chipping and falling out and teeth shifting in their position.
  • Teeth grinding and sleep loss: Many people can grind their teeth while asleep and not be aware. Sometimes the grinding can cause micro fractures that eventually lead to a broken tooth.  Sleep problems (sleep apnea) can be a contributing factor to teeth grinding
  • Eating disorders: To avoid the pain caused by the affected teeth and joint, people find themselves skipping meals or avoiding solid foods and favor of a soft diet. This can result in malnourishment or eating disorders.

It is important to be proactive when TMJ related symptoms occur. Left untreated it will get worse.   I have had extensive training in this area and am a highly respected expert in all areas of jaw health and bite alignment. I offer gentle, non-invasive treatment methods tailored to your needs.
